Authorities responsible for supervising public safety at the Mavericks Surf Contest say they’ll meet in the next couple weeks to discuss access to Pillar Point during future contests in light of injuries and damages incurred during this year’s event on Saturday.

Thirteen people were hurt, three of which went to the hospital. Thousands of dollars in sound equipment and contest infrastructure was wiped out – all due to a powerful wave that swept over the base of the breakwater at Pillar Point in the early hours of the contest.

Contrary to published reports elsewhere, Mavericks Surf Ventures CEO Keir Beadling e-mailed the Review this morning to say there was no meeting planned for this week. “Nothing scheduled this week, as far as I know,” he wrote.

San Mateo County Supervisor Rich Gordon said cordoning off the entire area – Mavericks Beach, the bluffs and cliffs above, and the area where the wave struck – to spectators at later surf contests might be the next step safety coordinators take to avoid such problems in the future.

“I think, initially, that’s my first impression,” Gordon said. Either Gordon or one of his aides attend every one of the Mavericks Surf Contest public safety meeting, which began six years ago. “Our safety plans continue to evolve....I think we’ll have to take a look at how to readjust to provide a great contest with maximum safety.”
